The TRUTH: Getting your newly treated MIXING studio to TRANSLATE - What sound engineers NEED to know

One of the often more surprising things about treating your room is this:
You go through all that effort of planning, building, moving, bleeding, sweating, crying and pushing on to find that at a first listen it sounds absolutely fantastic!
But the first mix still turns out like garbage.
And the second mix does as well.
Wasn’t the room supposed to translate properly now?
Did you do something wrong?
On a closer listen all your reference music still sounds great. But when you really pay attention certain weird things do pop out.
Maybe panning and width isn’t like you expected.
Or just the balance and placement of elements is quite different than how you used to hear it.
Like the placement of the vocal, or the smack of a snare drum.
You’re confused. What’s going on?
Well let me start by saying that this is actually completely normal!
Especially if the room sounded particularly bad previously, you likely conditioned your hearing to adapt in some very particular ways.
And it can take time to re-condition your hearing to the new setup.

ChatGPT You are so right! It took me two years to feel comfortable in my new room. After a flood, I had to rebuild it and tried to make it better. For a long time, I was cautious with bass and sub-bass, and it took me a while to realize that I could place the low frequencies wherever I wanted without any second thoughts.

I borrowed some Kef reference ones.. which I was thinking of upgrading to from my R3s, but I can honestly say I prefer the R3s. it’s not a particularly high-end system, but it’s in the region of 25K, I even prefer the R3 to the R3metas.. that’s my opinion based on my kit and my room..

Appreciate this one, Jesco. Particularly as I'm at the stage where my (small) room has been treated as best I can. Also recently incorporated a sub and re-training my ears with this new set-up has definitely taken some time. I just long for the time when all the stars align and mix translation will no longer be an issue! Keep up the good work.

Love the info on your channel! I'm finishing up a remodel on my house and will have a new studio room, much larger than what I had before. So your info has been a sanity check and I'm lining up all the work of building new acoustic treatment, treating the room, and then re-learning to mix in it.

Totally agree with all of this. Especially about using mixes and just doing some work. Direct and too the point, with the side benefit being that you finished some music along the way! You don't get that with exercises.

One would expect that if stratospherically priced speakers are getting anywhere near to perfect that their sound would converge and sound similar. But in any number of auditions they sound as different from each other as they do compared to much lower priced speakers.

So the screen in the middle of your speaker can’t affect your depth perception? There has to be some reflection that bounce off the edge of the speaker that hit the monitor and then your ears, no?

If the top end of mastering engineers are using uber high priced monitor systems with incredible detail (rubber band analogy) then why are so many masters so terrible? John Darko eluded to this with ridiculous dynamic compression on almost all modern remasters. Is it a case of you can have the (expensive) tools but still have poor taste?

I wish I'd known more about room correction earlier as it would have saved me thousands of £. I made 2 bass traps and 2 absorption panels for £30 and bought 8 UA Acoustic absorb/diffuse panels for £155 and the room/sound is amazing. You must do this in your room. Look into it chaps.

i really like this channel and have gotten useful information, but in this case you are mistaken. The reason to get your speakers off the top/shelf of a desk is to get them at the proper height and spacing AND for possible desk reflections. Decoupling/speaker vibration is not a real thing. There is no science behind any of that affecting the actual audio that reaches your ears at the mix position. If I'm mistaken I would love to read-up on real-world experiments that prove me wrong.

Drivers located more than 100cm from the floor are twitters but the frequency range of twitters is way higher than 130kHz. Reflection of sound not only creates cancellation of frequency but also interferes direct sound from the drivers. Those interference creates distortion. Louder the sound, higher the distortion. If carpet doesn’t help, acoustic panel is useless too because they also only absorb high frequencies. However, I see you have few of them installed.

I think those measurements although very transparent are putting us in wrong track . Computer/program is aming to give observer exact frequencies of detected standing waves so it is presented in form of separate lines which has nothing to do with nature and looks harming to sound . . If we could see the real situation each resonance has it's so called goodeness or selectivity and in acoustics they are quite soft. say 30 Hz resonance means that 28Hz to 32 Hz is way above level. Next resonance may cover pervious not leaving "empty space " between If it would be anyway so presented on screen then no any clear conclusions would emerge. All standing waves are accompanied with multi neighbouring lifted harmonics - only in shape of stiff ball it could be almost sharp We have real rooms with minuimum three dimensiions each is diferent, square in shape , with furniture affecting such results , windows with different ability to reflect and not in line with surface of wall , couratins, so we have whole spectrum of standing waves which I would consider for listener marvealus gain which helps to make big bass with not much speaker size and power. When we beat it then we need to replace it with power of generated bass. In case of room treatment we create another problem that mid/high range cannot be reflected and is heard only direct which is very desired by purists. But resonanat low range which cannot be beaten by used room treatment is amplified by room and is not matching midrange. sopranos providing that our music may be overlayed with bass . Traps may be not enough to balance it back . .

“Wind yer neck in and concentrate on you” Love it. I can’t afford anything new, let alone hi end. But 20 odd years ago people could, so I buy stuff off them. So I now have 2, 4.1 systems...The TV, Living room set up is A Pioneer PD-S703 cd player, Humax box, and Roku TV box, and Sony BDP-S6700 4K upscaling Bluray player, going into a Marantz NR1504, feeding 2 x Tannoy 611 Mk2’s and 2 Gale 30 Series 3060b 100w Bi Polar Surround Sound Speakers above the TV., I also got a Kenwood Series 21 centre as I had a space restriction. This sits on a shelf in a bay window with the 611’s. Compared to anything else I have heard so far, it sounds amazing. Upstairs I have a Pioneer PD-S904, a Panasonic Blueray player DMP BD30. A PC HDMI linked to a Panasonic TV, with a 3.5mm cable switching system for my Sennheiser HDR 180 RF headset and Yamaha Powered Centre (YSP-500) and an Avantree Oasis C bluetooth receiver, with the PC having an Avantree DG45 bluetooth dongle, which send great quality aptX sound to my Srhythm NC25 wireless headpones. The speakers are 4 x SB-PF6 from an old Panasonic Surround system. I know it’s not the best, but it’s the best I can afford, it’s quality sound for next to nothing, and the total was around £1000. I loved the PD-S904 so much I found a new one, (god knows where it’s been for 20 odd yrs) for a spare. I love both systems, they were built for different purposes, and do the job I gave them more than well enough. I’m super happy with them both, and I don’t lose any sleep thinking I’m missing out on something. :)

In the last week or so I've finally dived down the acoustic rabbit hole. ! bought the behringer mic, downloaded REW and I have watched hours of Jesco's great videos as I came to realise everything about my music room was wrong I'm not sure of this take though. I can understand why he can't recommend a particular product, because he doesn't feel he has the data to vouch for it, or doesn't want to talk about something 99% of views can't get. But I don't understand the blanket advice not to use them. If I can access it and afford it, and there is data to back it up, I'd rather use something other than rock wool or fibreglass. If I'm going to spend hours in a room every day, I don't want a nagging doubt at the back of my mind that I'm breathing in the new asbestos. Which is what we're worried about. After all they were designed to be stuck behind dry wall. I think this is very different to say, refusing a vaccine because of a 'nagging doubt'. The worst thing thing that could happen if you don't take a vaccine is that you die and infect others. In this case, what's the worst thing about using an eco-friendly product that works? It costs more? - I've spent so much money on gear I didn't need, I think I'd like to avoid buying that next guitar and spend it on eco-friendly absorbtion instead Dead rats might be great sound absorbers too, and I'm sure there is very little chance of getting bubonic plague from them, but I wouldn't like to have them all over my wall and ceiling, even if they have a layer of fabric and plastic on them.

While watching I wondered whether one could (in theory) create an angled wall (not perpendicular to the others) which "created room modes" across a specific frequency range to boost dips in the frequency response. That is, instead of absorbing energy, what if we tried to "redirect" it to flatten the frequency response? And then I discarded the idea because I'm guessing it would destroy phase response..

Absolute sound is not an illusion. Go to a Yamaha or Steinway piano in a theater or music room and play it or listen to it for sound. Thats real. Now compare your sample system and note differences with various recordings using the particular model of piano that is your reference. Do the same for various instruments. Including voices choirs quartets symphonies etc. The closes system to the real absolute sound is the more neutral.

Hello Master Jesco, In my case, it's for a home theatre and I don't have the ability or equipment to do measurements as you mention in this video. And because my home theatre is also my living room, corner bass traps are not ideal. So if I'm to use made from a supplier, rigid fibreglass panels (6 lbs/cubic foot) covered with an acoustic tissue, can I treat my front wall with 5 or 6 inch thick panels of 2' x 4', placing 2 behind my L & R mains and 2 behind my large screen TV, all evenly spaced as a good start to treating my space? And will this control necessary low to mid frequencies to help improve my listening experience? I cannot treat side wall reflections because of my layout... only front wall, back wall and ceiling. I do have a thick rug on the floor between my MLP and the centre channel. My living room space is 20' W x 25' L x 12' H. I'm running a 5.1.4 set-up. Your advice would be Greatly appreciated. Anyone reading and that has experience on the topic, please feel free to share your comments as well on my situation. Cheers to all my fellow enthusiasts! 🙂

Thank you for excellent content, as always 🙏 I have followed your advice and have finally got a pretty good environment for mixing music - except that I still have a huge resonant peak @ 27 Hz (maybe about 10-12 dB). I wonder if the right way to address this would be to build a Helmholtz resonator. What is your thought on that?

Maybe low volume gets more absortion since it's less energy there is less friction needed to kill the sound.

You can feel a bit less guilty about not achieving full effectiveness below 40 Hz by considering that very low bass is generally not transient in nature. This means that long decay times associated with modal resonance are far less of an issue than they are in the midbass. I think it’s sufficient to smooth the frequency response of the lowest octave with EQ, as long as you don’t rely on using too much boost.

Array Solution are just a lot of Planning and Prpgramming. Thats the downside. You need to put work into REW, Measurements etc. But when you set it up properly, you can get an nearly flat Lowend without massive amounts of Absorption arround it. Building 4x ,,High End,, Subwoofers with good drivers from scan speak costs under 2000euro. So the end costs are way under ~5k - and you get the best possible lowend. Both of my rooms have fundamental modes in the mid 20s... rather difficult to manage... unfortunately the lowest 2 octaves have so much influence on everything above it...

I have a Genelec 7360A 10 inch that goes all the way down to 19 Hz. I have 4" panels on the walls and triangular bass traps in the corners from GIK.

The 4 inch panels won’t do much under 200Hz

I'm fairly confident those bass traps from gik don't even go that low, and even if they did I bet my money they don't get enough of that low frequency energy

Related question, does it make sense to cut off my speaker at 40 Hz if I have a massive mode below that, which will be difficult to treat?

no, just sit in acoustic balanced position in your room

. 40Hz cutoff. That depends on the music you listen to. Music recorded in analog by microphones of humans playing physical instruments, for example, is a case where not much will be missed. There are very few instruments that play that low or microphones that record real low. Often times too, recording engineers compress low notes UP so that every day systems can resolve them. (edit) Which is the case recording live Reggae due to the Open B 5th string at 32Hz of the bass guitarist. Synthetic music can be created & stored digitally at very low frequencies. Hip-Hop, Electronic Dance Music and the whole Low Frequency Effects of home theatre are all way down there. Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊

Both. Always add a sub. 8 inch Krk with a 12 sub in a small room.. it’s too much… it’s awesome to have that power 😆

Would the same apply if I’m looking to only track vocals in a small room instead of mixing?

i lucked out back in 1984 or 85 when Polk SDAs were first available . they were on sale for $ 750 . i had zero experience with hifi so i relied solely on a recommendation from a small shop near me in a college town. none of the students were spending that much on stereos hence the sale . He also recommended the Carver M1 amp and a parasound preamp . well to this day i have not found anything i like better even spending countless hours of research and six times the amount . sometimes it's just blind luck in getting the right combo BUT i would NOT recommend relying on luck . making a choice today is almost infinitely more difficult , due to the enormous variety of speakers and gear . So, Good Luck and listen listen listen until you can't anymore .

Why do you recommend scatter plates for small rooms? Could vocals be recorded in them? I suggest buying some from GIK Acoustics 1d or 2d. I don't know which would be better honestly. How thick do they have to be in a small room?
